Mindful Eating: What Is It And Why Is It Important?

Mindful eating is an important life skill which can help you develop a satisfying, healthy and enjoyable relationship with food. Don’t be mistaken though, as it is not a diet, or about the food you eat, but the way you eat. In return, mindful eating can promote a positive relationship with food and a more nourishing diet based on what your body needs.

The benefits of mindful eating:

Mindful eating involves paying full attention to the experience of eating and drinking, both inside and outside the body. It is about noticing everything about the food that involves your five senses: the shape, colour, taste, texture and smell. Mindful eating helps us to listen to what our body is telling us about hunger and satisfaction.

Being mindful can help you to focus your attention and awareness on the present moment, helping to disconnect from habitual, unsatisfying and dysfunctional eating behaviours.

The opposite of mindless eating

Mindful eating is the opposite of mindless eating.

Mindless eating too often becomes the norm, as we are trained from a young age to ignore our internal cues and instead eat in response to  external cues (time of day, availability of certain foods, for comfort, to alleviate boredom, out of habit, to clear our plate, as a reward).

Mindful Eating Strategies

The Mindful Eating approach uses strategies which can change the way we respond to food, both physically and emotionally. Some strategies to help you adopt a mindful approach to eating include:

  • Minimizing distractions when eating – turn the tv or phone off and be present with your meal.
  • Being aware of physical hunger and satiety cues to guide decisions to start and stop eating.
  • Identifying personal triggers for mindless eating such as emotions, distractions, social pressures or food advertising.
  • Acknowledging responses to food without judgment. Mindful eaters pay close attention to themselves as they eat. Notice your emotions when you eat and take note of how your body feels as you eat.
